New home on #Mastodon! Thanks @daniel for building the foundations of our new small instance: webtoo.ls. @vite, @vitest, and @elk have also moved to it, and you'll soon find other Web open-source projects in our local timeline. Lovely how easy it is to move between instances 🧡

@patak @daniel I keep seeing people changing servers and wondering whether I should do the same. Mastodon.social seems to have resolved its performance issues, and I have a lot of interests I want to follow beyond just tech. What's your thought/feeling on moving instances at this point?

patak

@lindsaykwardell @daniel I think it is a good idea to move to smaller and topical instances. Your local timeline will start having real meaning to you. You probably will know the admins and then increase your trust in how things are handled, and build a collective sense in case you can help with the server expenses or related resources. We also help spread the responsibilities and avoid single points of failure.

@lindsaykwardell @daniel I also read that some small server admins may block the biggest instances because they don't feel they can handle the moderation they want to achieve if their server is exposed to them. I don't know how widespread is this practice, but avoiding the TOP 10 instances is a good way to avoid this issue altogether.

@patak @daniel Yeah, I've heard that too. It's just difficult for me because I'm trying to follow tabletop RPGs, trans/LGBT topics, writing, NASA/space exploration, and all the code/tech stuff. Being on a big instances gives me a big net, and I never have to look at the local feed (which is basically worthless here).

@patak @daniel On the other hand, I'm a moderator on clocktower.social, I could hypothetically just move everything there, but am I cutting off my access to other kinds of content?

patak

@lindsaykwardell @daniel that's interesting, I think it depends on the server. There may be some instances where you are expected to only post about a certain topic. But I think in most of them, you can also feel comfortable posting about off-topics. Probably you want to choose a place that represents a big chunk of what you talk about on social media though, you have a point there.

@patak @daniel I think I'm going to end up writing my own Netlify-based variant of Mastodon at this point 😅

@randName Seems similar to the high level concept I was thinking of, yep!
